Westport Station was opened by the Great Northern and Western Railway Company
later to be absorbed by The Midland and Great Western Railway.
Westport is the terminus station of a 250 km rail route from Dublin.
and opened on 28th January 1866
A branch was subsequently constructed to Westport Quay,
which opened 1st January 1875 ,
closed to passenger traffic 14th September 1912,
closed to goods 1st March 1941.
Official final closure date April 1977.
Regular excursion traffic used the branch up to this date.
The track was lifted in April 1978.
A branch to Achill opened on the 13th May 1895
and closed to both passengers and freight
on 1st October 1937 - final closure.
The station boasts two platforms,
Signal Box, Water Tower
and the old two-road Engine Shed
is a remarkable survivor
