ABERDARE

a newly-built station close to the former Aberdare High Level

At Aberdare, looking towards Hirwaun, with the forward section still in use for freight, controlled by ground frame.

The main signalling control box for the Valleys is located at Abercynon.

PONTYPRIDD

- a very interesting station, which has undergone many structural changes over the years,

having been host for a very varied train service to many destinations, now only reached via Cardiff, as will be noticed from the above timetables.

Note the moth-balled signal box at the divergence of the lines to Treherbert & Aberdare with those to Merthyr.

Originally the junction was triangular but controlled by separate boxes

unlike the well-known junction at Shrewsbury, photo immediately below

The photos were taken by RVR Member, Alan Watson, accompanied by RVR Webmaster, NIgel Kirby,

on a journey from Wilmslow to South Wales on 22 August 2012

The journey started at Wilmslow before boarding at Crewe 07:32 Crewe (05:32 ex Holyhead) to Cardiff,

calling at Shrewsbury and Newport only, this service being also referred to as 'Gerald' .

before starting back from Cardiff at 16:15 hrs, having explored all-too-briefly the Welsh Valleys, as detailed above.

'Gerald' is the only service provided by Arriva Wales with first class accommodation,

and the opportunity to enjoy an excellent traditional English breakfast on the outward and equally delightful dinner on the return journey., was not to be missed.
