Boxing Day saw the River Calder burst its banks in Whalley
turning the area around Whalley Arches
into a massive lake.
The Calder normally passes under one of the 48 arches
but, as the pictures show,
it had swollen to such an extent
that it was running through many more arches.
The level of the river had risen to such an extent
that the footpath and Old Sols Bridge,
which crosses the Calder next to the arches,
were engulfed by the river.
The Main Road also flooded
under the Railway Bridge at Billington
and was closed by the police.
