Better still, we think that you would be proud to be involved with our work of helping to bring
an always improving train service to the Ribble Valley and through Darwen, all the way to Manchester.
Current “hot topics” are:
Doubling of the line by the insertion of one-mile-long passing loops
either side of Darwen Station to help punctuality - COMPLETED
and allow a genuine half-hour service from Blackburn to Manchester
Increasing the length of platforms along the Ribble Valley
to make them suitable for three or four car trains - COMPLETED
Extending the passenger service, on existing tracks, to Hellifield and beyond,
giving services to Lancaster, Skipton, Leeds and Carlisle.
This would bring York, Scarborough and Scotland into easy reach.
It would also bring Manchester Airport within an easy train ride
from all stations to Carlisle.

Sounds good? Sounds exciting? Help it happen, come to our OPEN Committee Meetings,
and get the inside information from Northern Rail and Network Rail. Even join the committee . . .

How to travel by train or ship...
Maybe you don't like flying, or are concerned about air travel's contribution to global warming.
Or perhaps you just prefer real travel by train or ship, where the journey is part of the adventure...
Either way, 'The Man in Seat Sixty-One' will tell you how to travel overland
comfortably & affordably
where you might think that air was now the only option.

HELLIFIELD TRANSFORMATION NOW COMPLETE |
|
Network Rail has completed a project
to refurbish historic Hellifield Station
in the Yorkshire Dales.
Built of iron and glass,
the station canopy is over 130 years old
and was last refurbished in the mid 1990s.
Network Rail has now completed a £550,000 project
to repair and redecorate the station canopies structural steelwork
and replace all the glazing panels.

Network Rail Area Director, Martin Frobisher, commented:
“This is a beautiful old building and the investment we have made to sympathetically refurbish it
will safeguard its future and allow passengers to continue to enjoy the station
for decades to come.”
The station is managed by Northern Rail
Richard Allan, Area Director for Northern Rail, said:
“Investment of this kind into our rural stations is extremely welcome
and Hellifield will hugely benefit from this refurbishment.
Our customers are now greeted by a brighter and more welcoming environment
and be able to enjoy the unique surroundings this historic station has to offer.”
Ruth Evans, from the Friends of Hellifield Station, added:
“It is great to see the work carried out to such a high standard on this magnificent station.
It is well worth a visit by using the famous Leeds-Settle-Carlisle line.
The Tea Rooms on the station are open most days
where you can enjoy a ‘Fireman's Breakfast'.
We would like to thank to Network Rail for their investment in this station.”

MANCHESTER PICCADILLY |
|
|
STATION CAR PARK IS EXTENDED TO 855 SPACES |
|
|
|
|
|
The demand for rail travel from Manchester's Piccadilly station has increased so much that car drivers are regularly turned away from the multi storey car park because it is full.
Network Rail is tackling the problem by creating an extra 263 spaces.
Built in time for the Commonwealth Games that were held in Manchester in 2002, the existing multi storey car park and level deck alongside the station have 592 spaces in total. However, that is no longer enough as Liz Ratcliffe, Network Rail's commercial manager (retail) explains:
“When the car park was built, there were plenty of spaces for everyone. What couldn't have been predicted at the time was the phenomenal growth in demand for rail travel right across the country.
“That, plus the increase to three trains an hour to and from London from the end of 2008 means that on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays we frequently have to turn cars away.
“While our passenger satisfaction surveys are always very positive, the recurring theme is the lack of spaces at peak periods, which is why we are extending the car park.”
The extension is being built using pre-cast concrete. When completed the entire car park, including the original building, will be clad in a structural steel that weathers to a natural brown colour over a period of time.
It has been used successfully on other buildings in Manchester and is seen as a good choice of material for a structure adjacent to the brick warehouses and the station.
It also provides savings for Network Rail as it is a low-maintenance material that doesn't need painting or cleaning, which will help the company meet its cost efficiency targets.
The existing car park holds a Park Mark safer parking award, and Network Rail will apply for the entire car park to be re-assessed so that motorists can park in the knowledge that they are leaving their cars in a safe and secure environment.
The extended car park will be entered into the British Parking Awards and will also be considered for a number of design and architecture awards.

Route Utilisation Strategies
are key elements in the rail industry planning process
Route Utilisation Strategies (RUSs) seek to balance capacity, passenger & freight demand, operational performance and cost, to address the requirements of funders and stakeholders. Network Rail is developing Route Utilisation Strategies to cover the rail network, in conjunction with rail industry partners and wider stakeholders.
Network Rail will take account of the recommendations from RUSs when carrying out its activities. In particular they will be used to help inform the allocation of capacity on the network through application of the normal Network Code processes.
