Former stations
Daisyfield
Daisyfield station was situated just after the Clitheroe line left the East Lancashire line at Daisyfield Junction, Blackburn. The old platforms are still just about visible.
It opened in 1854 and closed in 1958.
The signal box that can be seen in the photo above, is still in use, controlling the adacent level crossing and the short length of single line here.
Wilpshire for Ribchester
Wilpshire for Ribchester station was just a few hundred yds down the line from the current Ramsgreave and Wilpshire station.
It opened in 1850 when the line opened as far as Chatburn, originally named Ribchester. It closed in 1962 when the passenger service between Blackburn and Hellifield was withdrawn.
Both the platforms and former goods yard (visible in this photo) are now under housing. The current Ramsgreave & Wilpshire station opened when the Blackburn – Clitheroe line was re-opened to passengers in 1994.
Chatburn
Chatburn was the terminus of the line for several years. The station was near to the Pendle Hotel.
The line and original station opened in 1850 but this station dates from 1872, a few years before the line was extended to Hellifield. It closed when passenger services between Blackburn and Hellifield were withdrawn in 1962,
Rimington
Little can now be seen of the station that served the village of Rimington.
It opened when the line was extended beyond Chatburn as far as Gisburn in 1879 and closed in 1958, four years before passenger services were withdrawn from the whole Blackburn – Hellifield route..
Gisburn
Gisburn was a terminus for about a year during construction of the railway as far as Hellifield.
As was the case with many rural stations, it was built with a small goods yard, in this case mostly used in connection with agriculture, mainly the adjacent livestock market.
The station closed in 1962 although the station master’s house is still very prominent in the village.
Newsholme
Newsholme station was very close to the bridge over the A682 about 2 miles north of Gisburn.
It opened in 1880 when the railway as far as Hellifield was completed, and closed in 1957. Most traces of the station have gone but the station master’s house is still in use.
